STEM Project Teaches Elementary Students How to use Math

By Sandy Sabot for Washington School District

Students at Washington Park Elementary recently worked on a "Bridge Building Challenge" with Math Strategies teacher Tory Stevens. The classes discussed different types of bridges and viewed pictures of some of Pittsburgh's bridges. Discussion about the recent collapse of the Fern Hollow Bridge in Frick Park in Pittsburgh had the classes discussing how important it is to have good bridges that are built to last. Ms. Stevens explained that the classes talked about the needed collaboration among engineers, architects, and others in building or repairing bridges. Afterward, students worked in groups to build a bridge with different materials provided by Ms. Stevens to see which could stand on its own and hold one "car." The students enjoyed this STEM activity because it dealt with the real world and current events and how people can make a difference in how they do their jobs.
