Veterans' Day Assembly Honors Those Who Served

Kevin Ola and George Lammay
Army Veteran Kevin Ola

Several veterans and their families and friends joined with the junior and senior high students on November 11th for the annual recognition for all those who served our nation. The band played a number of patriotic songs and the chorus sang, including the songs for each branch of the military - Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, and Air Force. Flags representing each military branch were brought in when their songs were sung, and those who served in that branch stood to be recognized and applauded.

The main speaker was Army veteran and current TSA/Homeland Security officer Kevin Ola who told the audience about what serving meant to him and how much it had affected his life. "I have seen places in the world that I never would have if I hadn't joined the military. I learned about different cultures and learned how different people live. Serving helped to shape my whole life." Ola explained how he joined ROTC and gained a scholarship for college and went from there to serve in Iraq and was "imbedded with the Kurds and we were like famly. My unit had about 10 guys and I could still contact any one of them at any time and he would help. It is like family."

Teacher Jessica Ott and the Student Council organize the event each year to bring members of the community in to be thanked for their service to our country and in the process, educate the junior and senior high students about military service.
