Her smile is contagious and her persistence is evident. Raelynn Cox, a 9 year old girl who was born with Down Syndrome, may have had delays in development, but, she is progressing at a steady pace with help from her family, teachers, and therapists at Washington Park Elementary.

Washington Jr. High Classes Work on Projects for NAACP's Black History Open House
February is Black History Month and Junior High Social Studies teacher Erin Moore is having her classes work on studying local history using available resources like ancestry.com and local articles and booklets. The posters, power point displays, and QR-coded artwork will allow visitors to the NAACP's Open House an opportunity to learn about local Washington black history.

College Selection Announced by Carlos Harper II
Carlos Harper II smiles after announcing he has made his college decision. Offered opportunities to play football at 4 different schools, including WVU, Gannon, Duquesne, and West Liberty, Harper chose West Liberty at his official signing held February 8th.

2nd and 7 program
The "2nd and 7" reading program created by three former Ohio State University football players in 1999 continues to encourage second -graders to increase their reading. Washington School District is one of the districts that has participated for nearly 10 years with the program that brings high school student athletes to the elementary school for a time of sharing and reading on 2/7.

Washington School District Hires New High School Principal
The Washington School District has hired Matthew Mols to serve as the new high school principal. Washington School Board on Tuesday unanimously approved hiring Mols, who currently is the assistant principal and director of the Career Technology Center at McKeesport Area High School.

Prexie Performers Portray Sherlock Holmes with the female version -- "Miss Holmes"
Washington School District's Prexie Performers Senior Morgan Winters as Michael Stamford, Dr. Dorothy Watson's love interest; Junior Cheyenne Desmond as Detective Geoffrey Lestrade; and Senior Savanna Mellish as Mycroft Holmes, the brother of Miss Holmes (played by Julia Sandoval, not in photo) as they prepare for the upcoming performance of "Miss Holmes", a play that is based in the 1880s in England and is the female version of Sherlock Holmes.

Maintenance staff member Joe Russell is retiring. He was thanked and congratulated by the district school board at the January 17th board meeting.

January Students of the Month and School Board Honored
Five students were recognized by the principals and administration at the January 9th school board meeting. The Washington School Board was also thanked and recognized for their commitment to the district by Superintendent George Lammay.

Wash High Students to Participate in District and County Chorus
Washington High School sophomore Thomas Inghram will represent Wash High this week at the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District I Chorus at Thomas Jefferson High School on January 12 and 13th. Two Wash High seniors are among the five Wash High students chosen for participation in the Washington County Chorus Festival which will be held January 26 and 27 at Penn West-California. Rose Strickler will sing first soprano and Omogbolahan Sanni will sing second bass.

Wash High Football Player signs with Rutgers University
Wash High Senior Davoun Fuse signed his letter of intent on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, to continue his academic and football career for Rutgers University. He was accompanied by his parents and brother at the signing table. Also in attendance were Davoun’s family, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches, and district administration.

Washington Elementary Students Perform Holiday Concert
Parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends packed the Park School auditorium on Thursday, December 15th to hear holiday music.

Washington Junior/Senior High School Band Concert
Washington Junior/Senior High School held its annual Holiday concert on Tuesday, December 20th. The audience enjoyed special holiday selections in performances by the Jazz Ensemble, Junior High School Chorus, Junior High School Band, Steel Band, Choralaires, and Symphonic Band.

Washington Jr./Sr. High School recently hosted its 6th annual "Minute to Win It" event with 121 life skills support students attending from 10 western PA school districts.
