Washington High School offers a continuation of the students’ middle school choral experience. Not only are the students responsible for learning the music for concerts, but they are also to continue learning their music theory and sight singing. The music ranges from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to John Rutter, and from Andrew Lloyd Webber to Howard Shore. The high school chorus has opportunities for solos, either within a small group or within song selections. Those students who are interested are encouraged to enter into Junior District Choir, Honors Choir, and District Choir (the latter two are by audition in competition with students from other schools). The chorus also performs with the drama department, which holds such opportunities as coffee houses, madrigal dinners, and dinner theatres.
The Prexie Performers
Washington High School’s elite acting group, The Prexie Performers was established by Judith Totty in 1988. The Prexie Performers’ mission has always been to present thought provoking theatre on educational topics, current social issues, or pure entertainment that is of interest to people of all ages in our community. This group strives to create true art that moves the audience by touching their hearts and transforming them forever. In 2005, the Prexie Performers added Brandy LaQuatra to the group as Assistant Director.
Catharsis
Catharsis is Washington High School’s art and literary magazine. Brandy LaQuatra and Judith Totty established the club in 2005 to promote the arts within the school community.
The mission of Catharsis magazine is to create a community of lifelong learners where creativity, expression, and passion are nurtured and guided. Catharsis benefits all students because it gives them an outlet to utilize their creative energies on a larger scale. In our quest to continue to move forward, especially in the areas of creative communication, Catharsis teaches students how to choose literary and art pieces for publication, how to design a layout using Adobe Create Suite, how to proofread a document and how to make artistic decisions. Students also learn how to write business letters, meet deadlines and develop solid advertising skills.
Students develop a sense of pride knowing they are involved in an activity that creates the human experience from the point of view of their peers. Catharsis magazine provides our students with a voice to express who they are right now.
